How to Build a 5-Star Google Review Profile for Your Service Business
When a potential client searches for your service, your Google review count and rating is the first thing they see β before your website, before your social media, before anything. Businesses with 30+ reviews at 4.7+ stars consistently outperform competitors with fewer reviews regardless of how much better their service actually is.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
You can't collect reviews without a Google Business Profile. If you haven't already: go to business.google.com, search for your business name, and claim it. Fill out every field β business hours, service area, description, photos, and the correct business category.
Step 2: Get your review link
From your Google Business Profile dashboard, find the "Get more reviews" button and copy the short link. Save it as a text shortcut on your phone (most phones have a "text replacement" feature β type something like ".review" and it expands to your full link).
Step 3: Ask after every single job
This is the most important step β and the one most people skip. Make it a rule: after every completed job, send the review link. No exceptions.
Step 4: Respond to every review
Google rewards businesses that engage with reviews. Responding to reviews:
- Signals to Google that you're an active, engaged business
- Shows potential clients that you care about feedback
- Gives you a chance to address any concerns publicly
For positive reviews: thank them genuinely and mention a detail specific to their experience. For negative reviews: stay calm, acknowledge the issue, and invite them to contact you directly.
Step 5: Make it easy with a QR code
Create a business card or small flyer with a QR code linked directly to your Google review page. Leave it with the client at the end of every job. Clients who don't respond to texts often will scan a QR code on a physical card.
How many reviews do you need?
- 5β10 reviews: Minimal trust signal. Better than nothing.
- 15β25 reviews: Starting to show up in competitive local searches.
- 30β50 reviews: Strong local presence. Google maps placement improves significantly.
- 50+ reviews: Dominant in most local markets. Very hard for competitors to displace.
