Platform vs. Independent: Should You Use Rover, Angi, GigSalad — or Go Your Own Way?
Almost every service business category now has a platform that promises to connect you with clients — Rover for pet services, Angi for home services, GigSalad for event pros, Thumbtack for nearly everything. These platforms are useful, but they come with real costs. Here's how to think about them strategically.
What platforms do well
- Discovery — Clients who've never heard of you can find you on a platform search
- Trust signals — Reviews on established platforms carry weight with new clients
- Payment processing — Built-in payment tools with no setup required
- Early traction — For brand new businesses with no reviews, platforms provide immediate exposure
What platforms cost you
- Commission — 15–40% of every booking, forever
- Client ownership — The platform owns the client relationship, not you. If you leave the platform, those clients don't automatically follow.
- Margin compression — After platform fees, your effective hourly rate may be below what makes the business sustainable
- Algorithm dependency — Your visibility depends on the platform's algorithm, which can change at any time
The right strategy: use platforms to launch, not forever
Platforms are a tool, not a strategy. The right approach:
- Use platforms to build your first 20–30 reviews. Reviews are portable — clients can reference your Rover or GigSalad history even when booking directly.
- Ask every platform client to also book directly after their first experience. Offer a small discount: "I'm also available to book directly — you save a bit and I do too."
- Build your own booking infrastructure — Google Business Profile, your own booking tool, a simple website. These don't charge commission.
- As direct bookings grow, reduce platform dependence. Eventually you want platforms to be 20–30% of your business, not 100%.
When to stay on platforms longer
- Your market is very competitive and organic discovery is slow
- You're in a category where clients strongly prefer platform guarantees
- The platform's insurance or protection programs provide real value you can't easily replicate
