Plumber insurance: what you need and what it costs
Updated 2026-05-01
Plumbers face some of the highest liability exposure of any trade — water damage claims are frequent, expensive, and can hit six figures fast. GCs won't let you on a job site without a COI. Most states won't issue a plumbing license without a bond. Here's exactly what you need and how to get covered quickly.
What insurance does a plumber need?
| Coverage | What it covers | Required? | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| General liability | Property damage and bodily injury from your work | Yes — for licensing and GC jobs | $800–$1,400/yr |
| Surety bond | Guarantee to state/clients you'll follow laws and complete work | Yes — most state licenses | $100–$400/yr |
| Workers' comp | Employee injuries on the job | Yes, if you have employees | Varies by state/payroll |
| Commercial auto | Vehicle accidents while driving for work | If you use a truck for work | $1,200–$2,400/yr |
| Inland marine | Tools and equipment theft/damage | Recommended | 2–3% of equipment value/yr |
What general liability covers for plumbers
GL is the policy that clients and GCs ask for. It covers:
- Water damage to a client's home caused by your work (burst pipe, failed fitting, overflow)
- Bodily injury — a client trips over your equipment or tools
- Property damage during the course of your work
- Legal defense costs if you're sued
Most GCs require $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate. Some commercial and municipal contracts require $2M per occurrence. Verify requirements before accepting a job.

Do plumbers need a surety bond?
In most states, yes — a surety bond is required to get your plumbing license. The bond protects the state and your clients if you fail to complete contracted work, violate licensing laws, or don't pay subcontractors. It is not the same as insurance and one does not replace the other.
Typical plumbing license bond amounts: $5,000–$25,000. Annual premium: $100–$400 depending on bond amount and your credit. Good credit = lower premium.

GL pays for these. Without it, they come out of your pocket — or your personal assets.
